Yoga and DBT Skills Therapy Group (Hope Therapeutic Services)

Yoga and DBT Skills Therapy Group (Hope Therapeutic Services)

This group runs for 5 consecutive weeks, takes one week off, and resumes 5-week group session cycle.

Yoga Therapy and DBT Skills Group would be offered weekly and last from 60-75 minutes. Each week, participants would be invited to explore the following themes: Befriending Your Body, Awareness, Acceptance, Discernment, and Choice. To assess how participants’ symptoms change over time, a pre and post assessment survey of their levels of distress will be recorded.

Participants would spend the first thirty minutes of each session conducting a series of Yin Yoga postures and breathing exercises. The remaining 30-45 minutes of the session would be spent in group process learning DBT skills related to each weekly theme.

Yin Yoga is a slow, meditative style of yoga that consists of holding postures for longer periods of time. Postures are also usually done seated or lying down. One of the main principles of Yin Yoga is to move your body into a posture until you feel discomfort without feeling pain. Participants are encouraged to breathe through discomfort and notice what they feel in their body. This style of yoga is paired well with DBT, since similarly, DBT also teaches the skill of distress tolerance. Practicing how to manage discomfort in your physical body can be a great segway into incorporating this same practice when experiencing emotional discomfort.

Group participants are welcomed to join as they are. Initial conversation prior to joining group helpful in understanding the best way to care for individual and collective group needs.
