Greater Newark Conservancy

Our success is measured in the number of people we can help with the quality of programs and services we provide. These programs are fueled by our dedicated staff, caring volunteers, and generous donors like you.

Youth and Family Education
Greater Newark Conservancy offers hands-on, inquiry-based environmentally-themed programs. The Conservancy’s professional staff is a partner in educating your students.

Our programs increase student enthusiasm, comprehension, and retention of key concepts across your school’s curriculum. Whether you visit us at the Conservancy’s Judith L. Shipley Urban Environmental Center, at one of our urban farms, or schedule one of our Reverse Field Trips to your classroom, we will work with you to meet your classroom needs.

Newark Youth Leadership Project
For 20 years, the Newark Youth Leadership Project (NYLP) has seen hundreds of youth participants graduate and thrive.  Through mentorship and exposure to outdoor and horticultural activities, our year-round training program guides high school students in their development of interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills. We empower and enrich our interns’ lives by preparing them for college, improving their technical skills, and exposing them to the natural environment.

During the 6-week summer program, interns are given the opportunity to work in one of several departments. Our Youth Farm Stand, Environmental Education, Horticulture, and Urban Farming departments each give the interns unique training and hands-on environmental education.

Urban Agriculture & Community Greening
The Community Greening Program works with Newark residents, community organizations, and the City of Newark, to address Newark’s deficit of quality preserved open space by enhancing existing community parks; creating new pocket parks; and improving neighborhoods with street trees, community gardens, landscaped recreation centers, and urban farms producing fresh produce.

Farm Stand & Cooperative Market
Each year thousands of pounds of produce are grown at our Hawthorne Avenue Farm and hydroponic greenhouse. Our urban agricultural sites produce, quite literally, tons of fresh fruits and vegetables each year right here in Newark's South Ward. All our delicious goods can be purchased at our mobile farm stand, which travels throughout Newark to connect residents with healthy food options.

Environmental Justice & Advocacy
Greater Newark Conservancy believes that no group, regardless of race, color, or national origin should bear a disproportionate share of the burdens and realize few of the benefits of living near industrial facilities. Historically, these communities have lacked the power or opportunity to participate in environmental decisions affecting their communities. The Conservancy remedies that by raising awareness and empowering people to participate in activities that may affect their environment and health.
