A Free Summer Enrichment Program for K-8 Scholars
Freedom School @ The Mark is a free, six-week summer literacy and leadership program designed to prevent summer learning loss, close achievement gaps, and empower children through a culturally responsive curriculum. Operated by St. Mark's United Methodist Church, our program provides a safe, engaging, and supportive learning environment for students in grades K-8.
What We Offer
- Reading & Literacy Development
Scholars engage with high-quality, multicultural books that promote a love for reading and critical thinking. - Social-Emotional Growth
Daily activities, including discussions, role-playing, and team-building exercises, help scholars build confidence, leadership skills, and resilience. - Civic Engagement & Leadership
Children are encouraged to develop a sense of agency, preparing them to be change-makers in their communities. - Health & Wellness
Nutritious meals and an emphasis on physical activity help support overall well-being. - Family & Community Engagement
Parents are encouraged to participate in weekly meetings, and the program fosters strong community connections.
Program Impact
- 72% of scholars maintain or improve their reading levels over the summer.
- Scholars read an average of 14 books during the program.
- Participants develop leadership skills, conflict resolution strategies, and social-emotional competencies.
- 100% of parents report satisfaction with the program and would recommend it to others.
Who Can Enroll?
Freedom School @ The Mark is open to students in grades K-8. Priority is given to children at risk of summer learning loss. Space is limited, and early registration is encouraged.

- Dates: June 30 - August 8
- Time: Monday–Friday, 8:30 am-3:00 pm
- Location: Glenfield Middle School - 25 Maple Avenue, Montclair, NJ
