What is the Fresh Air Fund?

The purpose of the Fund is to provide camping experiences for inner-city children from the Greater Newark area.

The “Fresh Air Fund” was organized by the Female Charitable Society (now Newark Day Center) in 1882. Camps selected today must be certified and accredited. Camps are evaluated and visited annually by Fresh Air Fund staff.

Applications are sent to schools, both public and private, and to various social agencies throughout the Greater Newark Area. Upon acceptance, parents and children attend an orientation in preparation for the camp visit.  All children must have a medical exam prior to leaving for camp.

The Fresh Air Fund also places children with physical and/or neurological limitations through placements at camps especially designed to accommodate their needs.

Individuals who wish to refer a child may do so through the child’s school or an appropriate social agency.

Suburban Visitation

In addition to providing camperships, the Fresh Air Fund initiated its Suburban Visitation Program in 1981.  Children are selected, with parental approval, to visit for one week (usually in August) with a private family, which is screened by the Fresh Air Fund staff.  Participation in this component is limited to allow for careful monitoring.
